Becoming a foster parent in North Dakota means opening your home to a child who cannot safely stay with their own family, through Health and Human Services. While the state's family foster home rules focus on pre-service training and home standards, being ready for a medical emergency through first-aid and CPR training is commonly expected by placing agencies.

The first-aid requirement

In North Dakota, family foster homes are licensed under Administrative Code Chapter 75-03-14 and applicants complete PRIDE pre-service training before a child is placed. An explicit statewide first-aid/CPR certification requirement was not identified in the licensing rule, but a current first-aid and CPR certificate from a recognized organization is commonly required by the placing and supervising agencies.

Requirements are administered by North Dakota Health and Human Services and its agencies. Where required, the certificate must be kept current, and it is one expectation in addition to the home study, background checks and the assessment of parenting suitability.

How to meet it

A recognized, up-to-date first-aid and CPR certificate meets this requirement. It is in addition to the required training or assessment, and is renewed periodically.
